Pinched Nerve

“Doc, I’ve got a pinched nerve.”  In any given week I may hear this phrase repeated dozens of times by new patrons trying to explain what they are feeling.  This has become a catch-all phrase.  A pinched nerve can be very painful, but it can also be a blessing in disguise.  Here’s why.  A situation where a nerve is irritated to the point that you feel pain is a serious one.  The causes are many, but they all point to one thing.  Your body is telling you something.  Now, in many cases when people feel pain they ignore it – eventually you may get numb to it and will “feel better”.  Notice that it is not corrected, your body just adapts to pain if you ignore it long enough.

Most pinched nerves, you can’t ignore.  They hurt too bad…that’s blessing #1, ignoring pain is always dangerous.  It’s about as dangerous as ignoring your smoke alarm or your check engine light.  You can do it, but soon enough the problem will catch up and you will have your hands full.  Blessing #2 is this, pinched nerves don’t respond well to being covered up by meds. You can’t just pop a few pills and be done with the deal.  Besides, what have you ever truly fixed by sweeping it under a rug?

Your brain and spinal cord can’t feel pain.  That is why people can be awakened during brain or spinal surgery.  Only one out of every ten nerves are estimated to feel pain.  Let me clarify, there are 9 to 1 odds that if you have damage to the system that controls and regulates every single function in your body you won’t have the benefit of pain to let you know something is going wrong!  It does not take much pressure to do this.  Most people tell me that their pinched nerve feels like a huge weight is sitting on that part of their body.  In reality, pressure the weight of a dime has been shown to shut off nerve signals by as much as 65% within 5 minutes of occurring.  What if that nerve went to your heart, lungs, legs, wherever?  Do you think you’d like to know about that kind of poor function?  I would, and that is why the pain can be helpful.

Now, I hate seeing anyone suffer.  But let’s look at priorities here.  Pain from pinched nerves is telling you that vital signals are not getting where they need to go.  I LOVE pain that saves lives.  A pinched nerve gives the kind of pain that causes you to take action.  “Pinched nerves” have led us in many cases to help people head off major problems that could have gotten very bad had the person let it go much longer.
