Bedwetting

This issue of bedwetting is one that has come into my life as the father of 2 beautiful children.  It hurts me as a parent to see my child frustrated or upset over something they had no conscious control over.  As a parent, I wonder about the job I am doing.  Did I not manage their diet and fluid intake well enough?  Is there some deep rooted psychological issue at the bottom of this?  If so, am I to blame?  On and on it goes.

From the chemical perspective the issue of bedwetting is a deep and complex one.  It can be understood in a common sense fashion if you remove the mystery.  I love seeing the lightbulb turn on for people.   I enjoy seeing clarity and understanding take the place of misplaced blame and shame.
Have you ever awakened from a deep sleep with an immediate urge to go the the bathroom?  There are chemicals responsible for sending that signal to arouse you from all but the deepest of sleep.  These chemicals also help your body to hold out as long as it can so you can get through the night without having an “accident”.  This holds true for kids and even adults.  In kids, the chemistry isn’t fully developed so control of the bladder at night is something they get better at as their body matures.  Let’s be basic for a moment, I remember in college the crazy stories of guys wetting the bed as a result of a hard night of partying and over consumption of alcohol.  Why did they go?  Well, the alcohol alters brain chemistry and boom – control is lost.  This concept applies anywhere in the body.  If you alter chemistry in a negative way bad stuff, embarassing stuff happens.  If, however, you make efforts to get the chemistry back on line positive results can be seen.

In kids and adults we have seen great results with this issue.  In those cases where we can help, it is because there is a problem in the spine.  Spinal problems damage normal nerve function, this throws off normal brain and body chemistry and the chemistry is responsible for the malfunction.  This has to be true – after all, look at what most dr’s give you to fix internal body problems…chemicals, drugs.  We don’t try and put new chemicals in we try to get the natural balance back.

In kids, there’s one more issue.  Development of the spine.  As the lower spine grows and changes it can get altered from normal alignment.  If this happens, nerves can be affected that go direct to the bladder.  This makes having your child’s spine checked at regular intervals a great idea.
